Code of Conduct at Oregon Girls State
There are a few basic rules for citizens at Girls State. These are in place for the safety of all those attending as well as to help foster a fun and educational week.
- All citizens are obligated to remain for the entire session; anyone leaving before Inauguration is over, has not completed the full week; this will mean loss of eligibility for the Samsung scholarship and usage of Oregon Girls State on college applications or resumes
- No citizen shall leave campus after checking in on Sunday; the only exception is to go on an organized group trip or to visit the Oregon State Capitol
- Citizens are to be in groups of two or more at all times when out of the dormitories
- Any citizen who is injured or becomes ill must report immediately to her County Staff
- No citizen may remain in her room during scheduled activities or programs
- Compliance with the dress code is required except when in the dorms
- All citizens must be prompt at all scheduled programs and activities
- Visits from friends, male or female, are not permitted at any time
- Citizens are allowed in other Citizens’ rooms only if invited
- Courtesy will be shown to speakers, guests, staff and other citizens at all times
- Use good judgment and common sense in all situations
OREGON GIRLS STATE PLEDGE
The following pledge is found on the Citizen Personal Record Card and is signed by each girl attending Oregon Girls State. Any citizen who fails to uphold her pledge may, at the discretion of the Director and Commission of Oregon Girls State, be denied the privileges of citizenship and be asked to leave the Girls State session.
As a Citizen of Girls State of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Oregon, I voluntarily make the following Pledge:
I will obey the rules of Oregon Girls State.
I will be present for every portion of the Girls State session and will remain for its entirety.
I will take a serious and conscientious interest in discharging my duties as a citizen of Girls State.
If elected to office, I will serve that office to the best of my ability.
I will respect the judgment of the Girls State Commission and Staff.
I will make a report of my impression of Girls State to my American Legion Auxiliary Unit, to those who financed me and to my school.
I will be fair and honest in all my dealings with my fellow citizens.
Oregon Girls State Dress Code
Because we will be interacting with a variety of people and utilizing the State Capitol building, we strive for professionalism in everything we do. This is reflected in the OGS dress code. All citizens are required to dress appropriately; citizens not in compliance will be asked to change.
“Blues and Whites” are the appropriate dress for every day of Girls State. Blues and Whites are white tops and either navy blue or black skirts or slacks that would be suitable in an office setting (business or business casual). We do not encourage girls to go out and buy brand new clothing; suitable clothing can be obtained economically at most thrift stores.
Clothes to bring:
- Enough white, business shirts/blouses for at least six days (2 or more are generally advisable) –tank tops or off-the-shoulder shirts of any kind must be covered with a sweater, although appropriate sleeveless shirts are allowed. Bare midriffs are never appropriate—check the mirror!
- Enough solid black or navy blue, business skirts or slacks for at least six days—pants must be professional slacks or Capri pants. Jeans and khakis of any color are not allowed.
- At least one solid navy or black skirt for flag ceremonies and other special occasions—Skirt must be at least fingertip length. Three inches above the knee is a good rule.
- Short, white gloves for flag ceremonies (check thrift shops or bridal shops)
- Other business clothes, if desired, for speeches
- Comfortable footwear, appropriate for business dress (no flip flops); break in new shoes—you’ll be walking a lot every day!
- Activity/athletic clothes for outdoor activities or running, if desired
- Comfy clothes for relaxing in the dorm—shorts, sweats, jeans, flip-flops, etc.
- Something to sleep in and a robe, if needed
- Business-appropriate coat, sweater or jacket (for rainy days or cold mornings)
